Subtitles for videos

I’ve just used the new subtitling feature in Camtasia v7 and it really makes it easy to synchronise the script with the video – you just click on a word in the script when you hear it to divide the script into two or three line chunks. So ideally the process takes only a little longer than the video itself.

The test video in question is A guide to making your thesis available online. This 10-minute presentation introduces e-theses, outlines their benefits and the issues they raise and describes the process requird to create and submit them. It is also available as an Adobe Presenter slideshow.

I uploaded the resultant MP4 to EdShare and was disappointed to find that the captions are not supported (I think). A quick dig around Google indicated that FlowPlayer (used by EdShare) can support captions, so I’ll ask if its possible to get that extension installed.

I then uploaded the same file to YouTube, plus the captions in SubRip format (essentially text plus timecodes). Camtasia can export your captions as a SubRip file, so it only took a couple of minutes to create a fully accesible video. Just click CC in the control bar to view the captions.

Intute to make a controlled crash landing

I’d heard rumours that Intute, the UK HE resource directory, was losing its funding, and this article confirms the sad loss of this valuable service. The real value of Intute was that it provided a collection of top-quality academic links curated by expert subject librarians, so that searches for specific topics yielded useful results – typically a few relevant web sites. Compare this with a typical Google search, where your results are determined by their (in)famous ranking algorithm, and what you get are links to thousands of web pages – of which you typically scan a few from the first thirty.

Anyhow, JISC has had to pull the plug on their funding and Intute is now in ‘maintenance mode’. I really hope that they are able to continue their excellent ‘Virtual Training Suite‘ discipline-specific tutorials… if not, such work will have to be wastefully replicated in most Universities. If economic recovery is just around the corner, lets hope that funding can be resumed and Intute made airworthy again.

Sorry about the aircraft analogy – I’ve just been to the Battle of Britain 70th anniversary airshow where I was thrilled by the sight and sound of 16 Spitfires weaving around the airfield – and many of these gleaming machines have been restored from wrecks.

I’ve been involved for a couple of years with a project to develop an online peer-review system. Dr Kenji Takeda of the School of Engineering Sciences developed the system using grants from the University’s Learning and Teaching Enhancement Fund. The aim was to enable students to provide anonymous feedback to the other members of their group projects on their teamwork skills

TeamPoll is now ready for general use – you can find out more by watching the tutorial videos I produced.

New guide to using EndNote X2

I maintain the University’s Academic Skills website, which hosts all kinds of advice and resources for students about developing their academic (study) skills. The Assistive Technology Service have just sent me a useful basic guide to the EndNote X2 bibliographic software, which is now available online. It covers:

  • getting started
  • managing your EndNote library
  • using EndNote with Word and
  • working with external databases.

I use Dreamweaver to maintain the site – a sharp contrast to TeamSite with its WYSIWYG editor and simple and quick drag-and-drop link making. Still, the new LATEU website is nearly done…
